Women are Making Strides in a Traditionally Male-Dominated HGV Industry

According to a recent report from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), women aged 20 to 29 achieved the highest pass rates for HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) driving tests in the UK in 2020. This is a notable achievement, considering that the HGV industry has traditionally been male-dominated.

Higher Test Scores

The report shows that the pass rate for female HGV drivers in this age group was 63.8%, compared to 54.4% for male drivers in the same age range. Furthermore, the overall pass rate for HGV tests across all age groups increased to 57.3% in 2020, up from 54.9% in 2019. This is encouraging news for the HGV industry and suggests that more young people are considering careers in logistics and transportation. It is also a positive step towards gender equality in the sector, as more women are entering what has traditionally been a male-dominated field.

Gender Diversity Progress

So why are women getting such high scores? One reason is the increasing availability of training and apprenticeship programs that promote gender diversity in the industry. These programs provide opportunities for women to gain experience and skills in the HGV sector, which can lead to better job prospects and career advancement. In addition, the pandemic has highlighted the importance of the logistics and transportation sector in keeping supply chains running. This recent spotlight may have encouraged more young people, including women, to consider careers in the industry. Whatever the reason, it’s encouraging to see so many people, both men and women, excel in the HGV world.
